The ancient semi-precious stone Lapis Lazuli is deep blue. It is a metamorphic rock containing several minerals like lazurite, diopside, calcite, amphibole, feldspar, mica and pyrite. The aggregate minerals from which the rock has been made decide the color of the gem-like royal blue lapis is made from lazurite or pale blue shade is made from afghanite mineral or the dull green is made from excess pyrite mineral. Thus its color can range from greenish-blue and turquoise blue to light blue to royal blue to a deep violetish blue. That's why it's been named Lapis Lazuli which means blue stone.
